You can’t push when you’re in Transition…

I recently heard this phrase and it really hit a cord within my deepest heart.

“You can’t push when you’re in transition.”

Um, yep…I’ve had first hand experience with this fact. The person who said it (and I wish I could give them credit for it but I heard it on the radio and don’t remember who it was exactly) well, they weren’t referring to childbirth, but that’s how it resonated with me. After having three children, one with an epidural and two without, I know the feeling of transition.

It was different with all three but the second birth I experienced was the one I remember the most of what it’s like to go through transition.

I started laboring around 5:30am and decided to sit in my rocking chair in the living room. I woke up my husband to join me but told him to go back to sleep on the couch. I was sure I was in for many many hours of labor ahead of me, but I wanted him to be near me just in case.

By 6am, things were moving along quite rapidly and I woke him up by throwing my slippers at him, told him to go shower and call the grandma’s…this baby was on its way!

By 6:30am, I was in full-blown transition. I just didn’t know it. This was nothing of what I had experienced with our first child and it was totally freaking me out!

There is not a lot of room in a woman’s body for the baby to do what it needs to do, so it still amazes me that the birthing process takes as long as it does. But God has a reason for that…He knows we are slow to take things in most of the time and our brain needs time to process the reality of what is happening.

I did everything I could do get comfortable.  The rocking chair wasn’t working, the exercise ball wasn’t working, walking or standing wasn’t working. So, by 7am, the way my husband found me in the living room was quite a shock…on my hands and knees doing “cat stretches”.  That was the only thing that was remotely comfortable…and I use that word sparingly. Ha!

What I was experiencing was in fact, transition. That sweet little babe of ours was making her way to meet us. And as slow as the process seemed, it actually happened quite fast. By the time we got to the hospital at 7:20am, I was in the birthing room at 7:30am and she was born at 7:48am!  Yep….very quick!

As much as I wanted to have that baby, I could not push in the transition phase. It wasn’t possible anyway. No amount of willpower could have worked.

I simply had to go through it!

So if you’re still hanging with me here through my story…here’s the tie-in for transitions in life.

You cannot make a transition in your life happen any faster than it is meant to be.

To graduate from college, you’ve got to take the classes and do the work and it will usually take ya about 4 years to accomplish this goal.

When you buy a house, it normally takes many months to find “the perfect one”, then you put in the bid, then you go through escrow, then it’s yours! Unless that first bid falls through and you’re back in the searching phase until you find the one that all falls into place.

If you’re cooking a gourmet meal, it takes more than a few minutes. You have to do all the prep of shopping for the ingredients, chopping, slicing, measuring, marinating, etc., then the cooking….and then the eating!

But the transitions that are something the most difficult is when there is not a specific timeline that you can count on. Those are the times where the faith and trust we have in the Lord’s plan for our lives comes in full force.

You can’t push past the lessons that need to be learned. I mean, you can, but instead of moving yourself forward, you are really taking tremendous leaps backwards. There are necessary reasons why the Lord takes us down one path and someone else down a different path. We are all different and we all have something special to learn and grow through in order to give us the story and testimony that God intends for us to have.

Transition literally means*: movement, passage, or change from one position, state, stage, subject, concept, etc., to another; change.

Just as baby must go through changes to become a toddler, then a young child, to a teen, then an adult (and various stages of adulthood!); we too have spiritual stages we travel through.

I Corinthians 13:10-12 describes transition to us this way, But when that which is complete and perfect comes, that which is incomplete and partial will pass away. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things. For now [in this time of imperfection] we see in a mirror dimly [a blurred reflection, a riddle, an enigma], but then [when the time of perfection comes we will see reality] face to face. Now I know in part [just in fragments], but then I will know fully, just as I have been fully known [by God].

Each phase of life we go through, transitions will come and go. They have to make us feel unstable though. Standing firm in the foundation of God’s truth, we will always find stability to make it through each challenge we face. It is in those moments we can cry out to the Lord and ask Him to help us, to hold us, to keep us standing in the midst of transition and difficulty.

When a toddler is learning to walk and falls down, their parents don’t say, “Well, you tried that walking thing and it didn’t work out. We’ll just carry you around forever.” Quite the opposite!  They applaud that sweet child for their efforts and encourage them to get up and try again. I bet you can look back over your life, or over the past month for that matter, and see how God has used others to encourage you to get back up and try again. Because He knows that as you grow and transition into new stages of your life, you can use your experiences to encourage other people to do the same!  Get up and try again!

Isaiah 33:6 AMP “And He will be the security and stability of your times, a treasure of salvation, wisdom and knowledge; The fear of the Lord is your treasure.”

The Lord will always be our stability at each stage of life; personal, emotional, spiritual, and everything in between. He is the foundation we need to stand on (or kneel on!) when we are weaving through the stages of transition in our life. Going through something difficult is when we must rely on His strength. We can find a prayerful position to be in as we go through the transition. The pain, exhaustion, questioning, frustration ~ it’s all worth it in the end when we realize what God was getting ready to birth within us or from us!

Don’t fight it ~ engage in it!  There are various amounts of struggle that comes with transition…that struggle doesn’t mean you are doing the wrong thing. God is stretching you and what comes to fruition because of it, will be glorious!!

I’d love to hear what God is birthing in your heart & soul today!  Feel free to share!! Because when we share our dreams out loud, they are given a new life and the freedom we can experience is remarkable!

Ephesians 4:15 AMP says, “But speaking the truth in love [in all things—both our speech and our lives expressing His truth], let us grow up in all things into Him [following His example] who is the Head—Christ.”

Blessings,

René

Weaponized Prayer…

“Weaponized Christianity” ~ This phrase has been spoken about quite a bit in the news lately, because of various outspoken people who also hold public office. There are a ton of Christians coming out against some of these people saying that their public prayers/actions are unbiblical and that they are “offensive to everyone”, Christians and non-Christians alike.
But the statement that pops out to me the most is with the phrase, ‘weaponized prayer’.
But isn’t that what prayer is supposed to be?
Prayer is THE weapon to fight EVERY spiritual battle.
A battle entails weapons and we have to have the right weapons to fight a battle. To fight a spiritual battle we must be fully dressed in the FULL armor of God.
The famous phrase from one of my all time favorite movies, Princess Bride, comes to mind here: “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”
To weaponize means: to supply or equip with a weapon or weapons;
to develop for use as a weapon.
A weapon is: any instrument or device for use in attack or defense in combat, fighting, or war, as a sword, rifle, or cannon.
When facing any kind of battle, be it physical or spiritual, there can be a good amount of fear or hesitation. John 14:1 is a beautiful encouragement as we prepare to engage in battle.  “”Do not let your heart be troubled (afraid, cowardly). Believe [confidently] in God and trust in Him, [have faith, hold on to it, rely on it, keep going and] believe also in Me.”
As followers of Christ, we need to stand firm and not be intimidated by how the world says we should act. The world (and even some Christians) says that we shouldn’t be specific in stating our biblical beliefs and spiritual perspectives. That we shouldn’t run the risk of offending people by talking about Jesus. That we need to be inclusive of how everyone chooses to live and keep our ideas to our self.
It is truly not a surprise to me anymore that people simply come undone at the mention of the Name of Jesus! We all should! It has more power than we even have the ability to comprehend.
But let’s get back to the idea of weaponizing prayer!  Come on!!!  This is exactly what we do every time we are obedient to put on the full armor of God. Ephesians 6 gives us the tools that we need to be equipped to fight the spiritual battles arounds us and prayer is the supply chain leading us to the One who gives us the ability to attack our enemy, the Devil.
PEOPLE ARE NOT THE ENEMY!!  THE DEVIL IS THE ENEMY!!
There are so many people saying how Christ came to unite and not to divide. And I do not think there is actually anything biblical about that statement. The only unification that Christ came to bring was to unify a fallen world back to Him.
In the verse below, we see how absolute Jesus was about what we need to do to be saved. He does not talk about a variety of divergent paths that all lead to one single destination. His word does not encourage the reader to “find their own truth.” He is extremely clear on the ONE path to salvation ~ John 14:6, in Jesus’ own words make an incredibly strong statement. Just one of the many times He spoke truth in love, “Jesus said to him, “ I am the [only] Way [to God] and the [real] Truth and the [real] Life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.””
He came and died and rose again so that we would be reconciled back to Him. In doing so, He gave us the freedom to either choose Him and His way of salvation or not to choose Him and end up being eternally separated from Him.
Essentially, we are given the choice to divide ourselves out of His presence by not submitting to His plan of salvation. When Jesus was on the earth, He was absolutely the most divisive figure in history. And I think He still is.
He was divisive because He challenged people to lay down their own desires and their own ideas of how they thought life should be and choose to follow Him. To surrender ourselves to Him is to separate ourselves from the selfishness that a sin-nature brings out in people. In this way, Jesus was so divisive that people of that day, chose to have Barabbas (an extremely violent felon who had committed murder; Mark 15:7-15) saved from death on the cross and instead put Jesus there.
They wanted to crucify Jesus because he told the truth
and people couldn’t handle the truth.
We haven’t come too far from those people, have we?
Back in Ephesians 6, I counted all the words that even remotely have to do with weapons/weaponizing, and found at least 22 (depending on your Bible translation, you might find more):
* be strong  * strength  * be empowered  * power  * boundless might  * armor
* heavily-armed  * stand up against  * struggle  * successfully resist  * stand your ground  * stand firm  * fully prepared  * immovable  * victorious  * face the enemy  * firm-footed stability  * protective shield  * extinguish flaming arrows  * sword
* stay alert  * interceding
Here’s the key to all of these action words regarding our battle and the weapons we have ~ they are all found in the Lord. They are not found within us naturally. Ephesians 6:10 says, “In conclusion, be strong in the Lord [draw your strength from Him and be empowered through your union with Him] and in the power of His [boundless] might.”
Only through our union with Him, our obedience to follow His path for our life, and our determination to fight the spiritual battles that come our way alongside the Lord, will we be able to walk through this life victorious.
{If you have never read through Ephesians 6, especially verses 10-20,
please take a moment to do that today ~ it’s totally worth it!!}
As a follower of Jesus Christ, yes we are called to speak truth in love, and to love our neighbor as our self, to show kindness and grace to those around us. But we are absolutely called to be warriors for the Kingdom. And it is absolutely possible to battle lovingly! Ephesians 6:12 reminds us that the battle is a spiritual one ~ and believe me from my own experience…spiritual battles are real…they are no joke! That’s why we have to be aware!!
Just as we are not to use prayer as a disguise for gossip, we are not to use prayer against others. Ephesians 6: 18 instructs this, “With all prayer and petition pray [with specific requests] at all times [on every occasion and in every season] in the Spirit, and with this in view, stay alert with all perseverance and petition [interceding in prayer] for all God’s people.”
Stand firm in the faith of your salvation to speak God’s truth. Use the spiritual weapons we have been given through the Holy Spirit, and He will absolutely lead you into the battles that are yours to fight. And when you are tempted to back-bite against other Christians, check yourself, check scripture, pray about it…and more than likely, you will end up not speaking out. Remember, the battles we fight the most are spiritual. And what better way for the Devil to cause Christians to be divided against each other but to have us go to war with each other.
As Paul states in Ephesians 6:19-20, and it should be the same prayer for all of us, “And pray for me, that words may be given to me when I open my mouth, to proclaim boldly the mystery of the good news [of salvation], for which I am an ambassador in chains. And pray that in proclaiming it I may speak boldly and courageously, as I should.”
Blessings to you for boldness as you use your spiritual weapons responsibly!

Is God Tolerant?

Our world is full of a variety of opportunities for us to “live tolerant” ~ be it religion, diet & exercise, politics….and many more.

Actually, let’s look at what these words mean via the dictionary:

Tolerateto allow the existence, presence, practice, or act of without prohibition or hindrance; permit; to endure without repugnance; put up with.

Tolerant: inclined or disposed to tolerate; showing tolerance; forbearing; tolerant of errors; favoring toleration.

Intolerant: refers to an active refusal to allow others to have or put into practice beliefs different from one’s own.

In our current culture, if anyone disagrees with you on ANY matter, then it is determined that the person no longer accepts you as a valuable person.  That is what the world says.  The world says that we must collectively as a culture be completely tolerant, regarding each person’s life choices because it’s not nice to offend anyone.  Maybe it doesn’t matter what life choices people make…as long as “it makes them happy and doesn’t hurt anyone.” Right? My friends, what a lie from the enemy this is!  Simply being interconnected with families, friends, co-workers, etc., we are bound in our relationships in a myriad of ways.  There is not really any kind of action, or choice, that one person can make for their own life that does not affect at least one other person.  If you can think of something….I’d love to hear your perspective on this…truly!

In searching scripture for the words “tolerate, tolerant, and intolerant” I found several mentions.

Jesus allowed people to have their own opinions all the time.  One of the most well-known parables is that of the ‘rich young ruler’ ~ we read in Matthew 19 that Jesus told him to sell all he had, distribute the wealth to the poor, and follow in the path that Christ walked with His disciples.  The young rich man could do it…he was extremely wealthy and he valued his wealth more than he did a life of following the Lord.  Jesus did not run after him.  He didn’t chastise him.  Jesus let him walk away because He knew what was in the heart of the young man.

But when the Lord did some across someone who wanted to leave their life of sin, He was very clear that they should “go and sin no more.” We read this phrase in John chapter 8, about the adulterous woman.  She was set to be stoned (as was the custom of the day) because she was caught with a man who was not her husband.  We don’t know what Jesus was writing in the dirt (but I totally want to know!!) or if He was whispering anything to the crowd, but they all eventually went away.  Jesus did not give this woman a sermon on the sinfulness of adultery.  I believe she knew in her heart that what she was doing was wrong.  But in His gentle firmness, He told her that He did not condemn her…and followed it up by commanding her to go on with her life WITHOUT sin, and specifically, without the sin of adultery.

I’ve never heard a story about anyone who came to salvation with Jesus because someone made them feel guilty or ashamed.  People come to know the Lord and allow Him to have authority over them because of the unconditional love that Christ has for us.  However, the one condition Christ does give is…..go and sin no more.

The one time I found the word “tolerant” being used ~ it was in 2 Timothy 2:23-26, regarding how we as Christians must live our life: But have nothing to do with foolish and ignorant speculations [useless disputes over unedifying, stupid controversies], since you know that they produce strife and give birth to quarrels. The servant of the Lord must not participate in quarrels, but must be kind to everyone [even-tempered, preserving peace, and he must be], skilled in teaching, patient and tolerant when wronged. He must correct those who are in opposition with courtesy and gentleness in the hope that God may grant that they will repent and be led to the knowledge of the truth [accurately understanding and welcoming it], and that they may come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will.”

Let me be clear that NONE of the scripture references I checked out talked about intolerance: having “an active refusal to allow others to have or put into practice beliefs different from one’s own.”

What God’s Word DOES SAY is that we, as believer’s in Christ, are not to tolerate: evilness, sin, physical abuse, wickedness, human sacrifice, pride, sexual immorality, and twisted doctrine. These are all actions by a person ~ not the person them-self.  Let’s be real here….we are all born sinners, yet Christ came to die for sin within humanity, and He did so willingly.  He came before we had knowledge of His saving grace (Romans 5:8). It is our choice to be reconciled back to Christ, but we have to lay down our own wants and desires and agree to have Him be the Lord of our life (John 6:44).

The topic of salvation, Christ-like living, and all that being a Christian entails, these discussions are not always comfortable to have with friends/family who do not know the Lord as their Savior.  No one enjoys being told that they are wrong, or that they are living a sinful life.  But it is not by our human judgement that those loved ones are lost or saved ~ it is by sharing God’s good Word with them and encouraging them to make the choice that will ultimately save their life!  God is so very patient in terms of waiting for all to come to Him.

But He has no patience for sin…He will not ever tolerate sin and wickedness.  Sin is completely offensive to Him.  So offensive that God the Father could not look upon His own Son as He hung on the Cross…covered in our sin (Mark 15:34).

Hebrews 12:1-3, Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses [who by faith have testified to the truth of God’s absolute faithfulness], stripping off every unnecessary weight and the sin which so easily and cleverly entangles us, let us run with endurance and active persistence the race that is set before us, [looking away from all that will distract us and] focusing our eyes on Jesus, who is the Author and Perfecter of faith [the first incentive for our belief and the One who brings our faith to maturity], who for the joy [of accomplishing the goal] set before Him endured the cross, disregarding the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God [revealing His deity, His authority, and the completion of His work]. Just consider and meditate on Him who endured from sinners such bitter hostility against Himself [consider it all in comparison with your trials], so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”

Just because you do not agree with the way someone is living their life (in a worldly or sinful way) in such a way that they are completely outside the realm of God’s direction, does not mean that you hate that person.  What a disservice we do by not standing firm in our beliefs and sharing in love with that person, what we know to be our true identity in Christ.  Being a Christian does not mean we are perfect (btw…we never will be until the day we stand before Jesus in heaven), so if you are expecting your child, your spouse, your friends & family to be perfect….stop it!  Ain’t gonna happen!  Give them the same grace God gave you (and gives you on daily basis!) to learn what it is to surrender their will to the Lord’s.  The freedom they will experience can only come as we love them toward the choice to love the Lord God with all their heart, mind, body and soul! (Luke 10:27).

I love the following passage because it reveals the heart of Paul as he reacts to hearing that some people were offended by an exhortative letter he’d written.  He was writing to a group of new believer’s in Corinth.  He felt compassion that some had been hurt but he did not regret speaking God’s truth into their lives.

2 Corinthians 7:8-13 is part of a letter that the apostle Paul wrote to the church in Corinth; listen with your heart as he poured out his, For even though I did grieve you with my letter, I do not regret it [now]; though I did regret it —for I see that the letter hurt you, though only for a little while— yet I am glad now, not because you were hurt and made sorry, but because your sorrow led to repentance [and you turned back to God]; for you felt a grief such as God meant you to feel, so that you might not suffer loss in anything on our account. For [godly] sorrow that is in accord with the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation; but worldly sorrow [the hopeless sorrow of those who do not believe] produces death. For [you can look back and] see what an earnestness and authentic concern this godly sorrow has produced in you: what vindication of yourselves [against charges that you tolerate sin], what indignation [at sin], what fear [of offending God], what longing [for righteousness and justice], what passion [to do what is right], what readiness to punish [those who sin and those who tolerate sin]! At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in the matter. So even though I wrote to you [as I did], it was not for the sake of the offender nor for the sake of the one offended, but in order to make evident to you before God how earnestly you do care for us [and your willingness to accept our authority]. It is for this reason that we are comforted and encouraged.”

{The verses I have used today, are from the Amplified version of the Bible.  I really like the investigative and information way this version is written.  It takes a bit longer to read through the scriptures, simply because there are more words per verse, but the descriptive parts of each passage enlighten the understanding we can have of these verses.}

The following passage in 2 Timothy is beautifully written as to HOW we are to show the love of Christ to those who are yet to be saved, as well as those who are living a Christian life.  There must always be learning, correction, and encouragement of both those things in our lives so that we may continually mature as a believer. Especially in our current day and age, we are challenged daily because of our beliefs.  The reminders to be calm and steady are, I believe, just as important as being patient and encouraging.

2 Timothy 4:1-6, I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom: preach the word [as an official messenger]; be ready when the time is right and even when it is not [keep your sense of urgency, whether the opportunity seems favorable or unfavorable, whether convenient or inconvenient, whether welcome or unwelcome]; correct [those who err in doctrine or behavior], warn [those who sin], exhort and encourage [those who are growing toward spiritual maturity], with inexhaustible patience and [faithful] teaching. For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine and accurate instruction [that challenges them with God’s truth]; but wanting to have their ears tickled [with something pleasing], they will accumulate for themselves [many] teachers [one after another, chosen] to satisfy their own desires and to support the errors they hold, and will turn their ears away from the truth and will wander off into myths and man-made fictions [and will accept the unacceptable]. But as for you, be clear-headed in every situation [stay calm and cool and steady], endure every hardship [without flinching], do the work of an evangelist, fulfill [the duties of] your ministry.”

Let me end today…it was a long one, so thanks for sticking with it…by saying that my hope and desire is that everyone who is not a Christian, have the opportunity to encounter a believer who is as gracious and loving as our Lord Jesus.  But must also understand that the sin by which they are living within their own life cannot be supported by a Christian, because it is in direct conflict with what the truth of God’s Word is.  It is not comfortable to look within ourselves (Christian or not) and see the parts of our life that are sinful.  Our humanness detests being told we are wrong about something; to stop doing something because God says so.  It is because of God’s immense love for us that He is patient as we navigate this life…and when we find Him, how can we do anything but live a life rightly before God, to honor and serve Him with all our heart, mind, body and soul.

Blessings,

René

Take Care

“Take Care” ~ this is a common phrase in the English language.  People sign their emails with this sentiment, we end a phone call speaking these words, we tell our loved ones to do this.  But what does it really mean?  This blog idea actually came to me from a very unlikely place.

A darling young girl that used to go to my church, recently reconnected with me on Facebook.  It’s been fun to see the new journey she has embarked on…health, eating good food, and exercising.  We had a little “back and forth” with some messaging and she asked how my family and I were doing.  I wrote an update back to her with updates on everyone.  The response I received back startled me a bit…only because I needed to hear this.  She said, “You mention taking care of the girls and Tony but don’t mention that you need to take care of yourself too!” Whoa!!

I wrote back and told her that she was right!  We talked about a few other things and she ended the conversation with, “Don’t forget to take care of yourself first! otherwise you can’t take care of anyone else.”  The sweet words of encouragement from the heart of my Lord through a willing vessel who felt lead to speak truth in love.

This happened about a month ago, and sadly I haven’t done a whole heck of a lot to really take care of myself better.  It’s so easy to put everyone else on my list first.  I love being a wife and mom, a daughter and a sister, a volunteer and an organizer, a friend and a mentor.  But if I am only concentrating on the “out-pouring”, there will soon not be very much to pour out!  For one, my devotional life and bible reading has been extremely lacking in the past few months.  How interesting (and not too surprising) that the Lord will allow a variety of circumstances to bring me running back to Him.

Here’s the part I’m hesitant to share ~ but I feel I’m among friends when I tell you that I want to be closer to the Lord but I’m a bit afraid to see what He will require of me next.  Because I know a bit of what that’s going to look like.

Let me back up a little bit, and go back to “take care” ~

To take:  to get into one’s hold or possession by voluntary action; to hold, grasp, or grip; to get into one’s hands, possession, control, etc.,by force or artifice; to seize or capture; to receive and accept willingly (something given or offered).

To carea state of mind in which one is troubled; worry, anxiety, or concern; a cause or object of worry, anxiety, concern, etc.; serious attention; solicitude; heed; caution; protection; charge; grief; suffering; sorrow.

So when we tell someone to “take care” ~ we are guiding them to pay serious attention to whatever it is they are holding onto; to proceed with caution in their actions; to be aware of protecting what it is that they have received or what they’ve been given. Even as I read through these definitions (www.dictionary.com), I may rethink using this phrasing as easily as I have been in the past years.  Do I take care with all that the Lord has given me?  My family, my friends, my home ~ it’s all His.  But the one thing that is at the top of the list when it comes to my life, as a born-again believer in Christ, the temple of the Holy Spirit ~ am I truly taking care of René??

Tears are threatening to run down my cheeks and there’s a lump in my throat.  I don’t like to be in this place. However, it’s the best place to be ~ the place of a softened heart that can be molded to what God intends.  Do you ever feel like this?  That there is a physical change that happens literally, when you cry?  Like the chemical make-up of our tears can physically alter the muscle of our heart?  I think it does ~ our God is amazing and as part of His creation, that means I’m pretty amazing too!

About one year ago, I was at a women’s day conference at our church, and the whole time I felt God whispering eight little words with huge implications to me…”I am calling you to be set apart.”  Um, no thank you!  I don’t want to be set apart…I want to stay comfortable.  I like the way things are going!

I have not felt settled in my spirit since then ~ but I haven’t run off to Tarshish completely. (check out the story of Jonah – chapter 1 –  in the bible if I’ve lost you.)

So at the day retreat, during the sessions, I kept finding myself without a “seat saved” for me by anyone!  At first I was so sad…and that was the first time I heard God say, “I am calling you to be set apart.”  Well, I was doing a part of the introduction to the morning, so I was sitting up front with the other amazing women that I’m on Council with.  We all did our thing and went back to sit down…but I was the only one who went back to sitting in the front row…by…myself.  Then I heard it again, “I am calling you to be set apart.” Uh, yeah…I get it…I’m literally sitting in the front row BY MYSELF.  Well, the speaker was about 5 seats away from me, but once she got up to speak…oy vey!  And I hate sitting by myself!

Guess what?  I didn’t hate it that day.

Guess what else?  That scared me!

After lunch, we went back to the main sanctuary for the last session and I ended up walking in just before things started…and no one save a seat for me.  And I heard the kind whisper of the Holy Spirit, “I am calling you to be set apart.”  So I went back up to the front row….to sit…by…myself.

Guess what?  I wasn’t by myself ~ I was surrounded by the greatness and glory of my Heavenly Father.

I didn’t hate sitting by myself.

I felt free.

I think maybe part of the reason that the Lord has put this particular story to come to mind today, is to remind me that He is still calling me.  I am called to be set apart.  It’s frightening but freeing all at the same time.  Today, I’m embracing anew the call I know that is on my life.  I don’t have to have all the answers, but I need to pay attention to God’s direction.  Where to walk and what direction to take!

Life is full of various experiences that God uses to grab our attention.  I’m going through a few, shall we say, interesting situations (yeah…that’s code for frustrating, sad, irritating, and ridiculous) and out of all of it, I know that God is STILL on the throne and that He is STILL in charge, and that I can STILL trust Him fully with my whole heart, mind, body, and soul!

I Peter 5:10-11 says, Now the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ Jesus, will personally restore, establish, strengthen, and support you after you have suffered a little.  The dominion belongs to Him forever.  Amen.”

YES!  There isn’t anything that I’ll go through that the Lord doesn’t already have control over!  This is a great source of joy for me!  It’s not that God allows difficult circumstances to come into my life, it’s that He will use those times for my good and His glory.  I may not always understand them, but that’s not the point.  The point is that I continue to run to Him and His Word, to bathe in the truth of His grace and love.

Colossians is a beautiful book of the New Testament full of so much encouragement and direction in how we need to be living our life as true followers of Jesus Christ.  I love chapter 3 the most I think ~ balm to my soul on many occasions.  Verses 1-4 say, “So if you have been raised with the Messiah, seek what is above, where the Messiah is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on what is above, not on what is on the earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with the Messiah in God. When the Messiah, who is your life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.”

To follow the road that God has called me to, the way that He has called me to allow Him to set me apart ~ it has a simple first step ~ to look up and set my mind and heart on the things of the Lord.  The next logical step to help accomplish that goal ~ be in His Word daily and have many times throughout the day that I’m in conversation with my Lord.  How else can I know what He wants from me and where He wants me to go?

Guess what?

God has called YOU too!

You have a unique purpose that only you can fulfill ~ that’s how God works.  He’s so creative to fill this world with people who have talents and gifts to do His will.  But we have to surrender our own comforts and desires ~ trusting that God’s best is better than we can ever imagine!

Galatians 1 verse 15

When you hear the whispering of the Holy Spirit, reminding you that you are called to be set apart, don’t run to Tarshish ~ run to Him and embrace the adventure!

Blessings,
